Before the start of the program, I met up with another
classmate and we explored Melaka and the island of Penang. This
was such a great introduction to Malaysia before beginning the course. We
explored areas that we read and would later be studying about and saw the
differences in each of the regions.
Penang is an island off the northwestern coast of Malaysia. We took an 7ish hour overnight train from Kuala Lumpur and arrived bright and early to take the first ferry from Butterworth to Penang. It is a UNESCO Heritage site and has incredible street art to share the history of each street and location in the city of George Town.

Melaka is a 2 hour bus ride from Kuala Lumpur and is located on the southwest coast. Melaka is also a UNESCO Heritage Site and was a colonized town by the Portuguese, Dutch, and British. Ruins are located in the center of town and show the past rule and influence.
